Documentary Season kicks off, but what do we ask our subjects?

Documentary filmmaking at school film club afterschool in London

In the past we have been incredibly fortunate to have some fascinating people to interview as the children worked towards creating their dcoumentaries. Last year films were made about internet music star Jana Kirschner, British Airways Pilot Gary Paul and superstar children's author Jacqueline Wilson, amongst others. You can watch the films here in our Film Archive.

This term our Film Academies will be speaking with some seriously interesting people, people that they wouldn’t normally get to meet. The challenge will be getting the content they need in the time available from often very busy people. We will be working with the students on how to ask the best possible questions of that person, to then go away and make a film about what they’ve said and the experiences and advice they have shared.

The questions are crucial. They shape the direction and quality of the interview. Here are the different types of questions our crews will need consider:

  1. Open-Ended Questions: These questions allow the person to express themselves freely and provide detailed answers. Example: "Can you describe a typical day in your working life?”

  1. Follow-Up Questions: These are based on the answers given to previous questions. They help dig deeper into specific topics. Example: "You mentioned a challenge earlier. Can you elaborate on that?”

  1. Personal Experience Questions: These invite the interviewee to share their personal experiences related to the topic. Example: "How did you become interested in this field?”

  1. Opinion Questions: Ask about their thoughts or opinions on a specific aspect of the topic. Example: "What do you think is the biggest misconception about your job?”

  1. Factual Questions: To gather concrete information about the topic. Example: "What are the essential skills needed in your profession?”

Usually amongst all the answers given in the above, there’s something we can latch on to that will stand out as a unique perspective or experience that makes for a compelling watch.
